Welding for the railway sector
UNI EN 15085-2 CL1 /P is the reference certification for welding on railway vehicles and components. FDM is one of the few Italian manufacturers qualified at level CL1 — the strictest — with responsibility class P (full manufacturer).
UNI EN 15085-2
Qualification for producing welded components and structures for the railway sector, at the highest classification level (CL1 /P).
01 · The classification ladder
The classification ladder
UNI EN 15085-2 defines four classes based on joint criticality. FDM is qualified at the highest level.
Livello 4
CL4
Non-structural joints
Secondary components, minimal requirements.
Livello 3
CL3
Medium criticality
Non-safety elements with moderate requirements.
Livello 2
CL2
High criticality
Structural components without safety function.
Livello 1
CL1
Highest criticality
Structural and safety joints — bodyshells, frames, underframes.
02 · P
Responsibility class P
The letter P (Full manufacturer) certifies that FDM can build the entire welded component — from joint design to delivery of the finished product — without relying on third-party qualified partners.
03 · OEM
The OEM specification we open
Alstom, Hitachi Rail, Stadler, CAF, Škoda, integrators and maintenance shops require by specification EN 15085-2 certification with the class matching joint criticality.
04 · REQUISITI
Technical requirements for CL1 qualification
Not a paperwork audit — a technical journey built over time. IIS CERT (Notified Body no. 0475) verifies every requirement through on-site audits.
Welding quality system compliant with ISO 3834-2 (comprehensive requirements)
Responsible welding coordinator (IWE for CL1, IWT for CL2, etc.)
Qualified welding procedures: WPS backed by WPQR (ISO 15614)
Welders qualified to ISO 9606 by process, material and position
NDT personnel certified to ISO 9712 (VT, PT, MT, RT/UT as required)
Full traceability of materials, consumables, joints and batches
Initial on-site audit by IIS CERT + periodic surveillance
05 · SCOPE
FDM scope
The certification enables FDM to produce welded components for bodyshells, frames, underframes, cross-beams, brackets and auxiliary structures of railway and tramway vehicles, including joints with high fatigue requirements (CP A/B categories).
