Quality in fusion welding

UNI EN ISO 3834-2 is the international standard on quality requirements for fusion welding. FDM is certified at the comprehensive-requirements level — the highest class of the standard — with European validity through the EWF and IIW schemes.

01

The three levels of the standard

ISO 3834 defines three levels of requirements based on the complexity of the welded product. FDM is certified at the highest level.

Part 4

Elementary requirements

Non-critical productions, minimal control.

Part 3

Standard requirements

Productions with intermediate quality demands.

Part 2

Comprehensive requirements

Productions with high quality demands — highest level.

02

The eight areas of the FDM quality system

The comprehensive-requirements level demands simultaneous control of eight critical areas, verified in an annual audit by IIS CERT.

01

Contract & design review

Verification of welding requirements before order start.

02

Welding coordinator

In-house IWE / IWT / IWS responsible for the process.

03

ISO 9606 certified welders

For each declared process, material and position.

04

WPS qualified by WPQR

Procedures validated in lab per ISO 15614.

05

Material & consumable control

Receipt inspection, documented batch management.

06

Maintenance & calibration

Machines and measuring instruments under periodic control.

07

Inspection & test plan (ITP)

Scheduled destructive and non-destructive tests.

08

Full traceability

Materials, consumables, joints and batches traceable.

03

Why welding is a "special process"

A weld's result cannot be fully verified downstream by non-destructive testing. It must be guaranteed upstream, controlling every variable that affects the joint. That is exactly why ISO 3834-2 exists: it certifies that a company has built a quality management system dedicated to welding, capable of producing compliant joints repeatably.

Valore per il cliente: Process assurance for designers and quality departments.

04

European validity

The FDM certificate is recognised across Europe through two complementary schemes, available as PDF.
