Technical qualification document

Welding procedure qualification

The WPQR LB0020/25 is the technical document that qualifies FDM's welding procedures (WPS FDM 01/25 and 02/25). Issued by IIS CERT on 20/02/2025, it guarantees that every welded joint in production is repeatable, controllable and compliant.

01

What a WPQR is and why it is essential

A WPQR records the results obtained when qualifying a WPS (welding procedure specification) through destructive and non-destructive testing on a welded coupon. Only a WPS backed by a WPQR can be used in production on code-governed joints (EN 15085, ISO 3834, EN 1090, PED).

02

FDM's qualified WPS

WPQR LB0020/25 qualifies two FDM in-house procedures, covering materials, thicknesses, joints and positions typical of the structural and rail fabrication we produce.

WPS FDM 01/25

Qualified procedure for FDM structural joints, primary production reference.

WPS FDM 02/25

Complementary qualified procedure, extending covered materials, positions and thicknesses.

03

Qualification tests in the laboratory

The welded coupon is subjected to a test cycle under IIS CERT supervision. Only if all results fall within ISO 15614-1 limits is the WPQR issued.

NDT

Non-destructive testing

  • Visual examination (VT)
  • Penetrant testing (PT)
  • Magnetic particle (MT)
  • Radiography (RT) or ultrasonics (UT)
DT

Destructive testing

  • Transverse tensile
  • Guided bend
  • Charpy impact
  • HV hardness
META

Metallographic examination

  • Joint macrography
  • Micrography (if required)
  • Definition of range of validity

04

The qualification flow

01

pWPS drafting

Preliminary preparation of the procedure specification.

02

Coupon welding

Under supervision of notified body IIS CERT.

03

Laboratory tests

Full destructive + non-destructive cycle.

04

WPQR issue

Document release and definition of range of validity.

05

Production use

The WPS becomes usable on code-governed joints.

05

Why it matters for the customer

A qualified WPS means the joint has been validated in the lab before going into production: no operator-dependent variability, no surprises at inspection. It is the technical pillar on which ISO 3834-2 and UNI EN 15085 rely.

Valore per il cliente: Qualified and documented welding procedures.
